Leukemia is the general term for the following four different types of blood cancer:

* Acute lymphocytic (lymphoblastic) leukemia (ALL)
* Acute myelogenous (myeloid) leukemia (AML)
* Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
* Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML)

All of these cancers begin in a white blood cell, or leukocyte, in the bone marrow (the spongy center of bones where blood cells are formed). The cell undergoes a change and becomes a type of leukemia cell. The way patients are affected and treated is not the same for each type of leukemia.

People can get leukemia at any age. About 208,000 people in the United States are living with leukemia. This year, some 40,440 adults and 3,800 children are expected to develop leukemia. It is most common in people over age 60.

There are more than 100 different types of cancer. To ensure that we are always leading care at the cutting edge, UCCC has expert teams that each specialize in a small number of different cancer types. Because we are sub-specialized in blood cancers, including lymphomas, leukemia and multiple myelomas, we have treated the most common and the rarest types of cancer.
