Hematology & Medical Oncology

Richard Van Etten, M.D., Ph.D.,
Chief, Hematology/Oncology

The Division of Hematology/Oncology offers complete hematologic and oncologic services, with special expertise in solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, red blood cell disorders, coagulation disturbances and immunologic diseases. In multidisciplinary conferences for specific forms of cancer, members of the Division join physicians from surgery, radiation oncology, pathology, and other disciplines to review patient problems and potential treatment modalities.

Laboratory services include a highly sophisticated blood bank, and a blood coagulation unit that performs screening batteries, individual factor assays, complete platelet function studies and circulating anticoagulant measurements.

Staff physicians participate in multidisciplinary clinics including:

* The Breast Health Center, a multidisciplinary clinical service that provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for benign and malignant breast problems.
* The Liver Tumor Clinic
* The Brain Tumor Clinic
* The G.I. and Colorectal Cancer Center
* The Lung and Tumor Evaluation Center
* The Head and Neck Tumor Clinic

Division staff members are involved in the evaluation of new treatments for all types of cancers including new chemotherapeutic agents and multimodality treatments. In addition, the use of biological modifiers like interleukin-2 is being tested. Members of the Division pioneered the development and use of immunosuppressant drugs.

Bone marrow transplantation is an important activity of the Division. Both autologous and allogeneic transplants are performed in selected patients with leukemia. Autologous transplantation with marrow purging is also done in selected patients with leukemia, lymphoma and certain solid tumors.

The Medical Center is active in the delivery of specialized care to patients with hemophilia. The Hemophilia Center combines clinical care for patients with hereditary bleeding disorders, and experimental therapies for patients infected with the AIDS virus.

About Us
Mission

The mission of the Tufts Medical Center Cancer Center is to elucidate the mechanisms of tumor induction and progression by genetic, epigenetic, dietary, and other environmental factors and to translate basic discoveries into novel strategies for the prevention, detection, monitoring, and treatment of human cancer.
Focus Areas
Education

We are committed to educating our community about cancer prevention through good nutrition, weight control, and exercise. Our educational materials are readily available and easy to understand.
Early Detection and Diagnosis

A major focus through our easily accessible screening and prevention programs.
Treatment Options

We carefully explain treatment options and answer patient and family questions prior to deciding on the best course of treatment for each individual patient.
Treatment

We offer state of the art treatment by our top tier clinicians in a patient focused setting. We are a small, hands-on clinical institution, and patients are regularly seen and treated by our most senior specialists.

In addition, we carefully explain treatment options as well as clinical trial treatments available to patients.
New Therapies for Cancer

As part of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, we offer clinical treatment options available at premier cancer centers across the country.

Available new therapies and clinical trials are explained and offered to patients in easy to understand terms. If eligible, patients can choose to participate in clinical trial protocols, or not, without impacting physician relationships or state of the art treatment.
