Raynaud's research studies are designed to answer important questions about the disease and to find out whether new approaches are safe and effective. Research scientists are currently studying better ways to diagnose the disease and to predict and monitor its course and association with other diseases. Raynaud's research is also evaluating the use of certain drugs to help improve blood flow in people with the condition.

Raynaud's Research: An Overview
Doctors and scientists are hard at work conducting Raynaud's research. These research studies are designed to answer important questions and to find out whether new approaches are safe and effective. Raynaud's research has already led to many advances, and researchers continue to search for more effective methods for dealing with Raynaud's.

Current Focus of Raynaud's Research
Raynaud's research scientists are studying ways to better make a Raynaud's diagnosis and to predict and monitor its course and association with other diseases. They are also evaluating the use of new drugs to improve blood flow in people with Raynaud's phenomenon, for example:

* The prostaglandins iloprost and alprostadil
* The high blood pressure drug losartan (Cozaar®)
* A substance applied to the skin that generates the blood vessel-dilating gas nitric oxide.

Other Raynaud's research scientists are studying the molecular mechanisms behind the disease, the anatomy of blood vessels, and possible genetic associations. Researchers in scleroderma and other connective tissue diseases are also investigating Raynaud's phenomenon in relation to these diseases.

Potential Benefits of Participation in Raynaud's Research
In order for Raynaud's research to be conducted, volunteers are needed. Patients who join research studies have the first chance to benefit from Raynaud's treatments that have shown promise in earlier research. They also make an important contribution to medical science by helping doctors learn more about Raynaud's. Although these research trials may pose some risks, researchers take careful steps to protect their patients. Talk to your doctor if you'd like more information about Raynaud's clinical trials.
