Introduction

One of the greatest medical success stories in recent years is the successful treatment of acute leukemia in children. Just a few decades ago, mortality was universal. Now, survival has improved to greater than 80% for standard-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and 50% to 70% for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Despite these significant improvements, many children present with high-risk disease or experience relapse. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) plays a significant therapeutic role in treating these patients.
