Leukemia:

Hartford Hospital has long played a leadership role in the diagnosis and treatment of leukemia and lymphoma.

Our hematopathology department is nationally recognized. It is staffed with experts in the study of blood, bone marrow and organs and tissues that use blood cells to function. Hospitals throughout New England call on the department as a reference site for diagnosis and special studies such as immunohistochemistry (chemical techniques used to identify particular chemicals or proteins in tissue) and flow cytometry (a test that can determine the aggresiveness of a tumor) are used to diagnose these complex disorders.

Our hematology and medical oncology physicians have considerable experience in managing these patients using conventional and new cutting-edge therapies including targeted therapies such as monoclonal antibodies. Radiation oncologists also participate on this management team, and utilize both external irradiation as well as novel radiolabelled antibodies to treat these diseases in a collaborative fashion.

The entire diagnostic and treatment team gathers frequently to discuss challenging cases and develop consensus and protocols.
