Lymphoma & Leukemia

A diagnosis of lymphoma cancer
Some of the country’s most experienced cancer specialists practice at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center. We are all here for you and your family as you face the challenges of cancer. Because different types of cancer behave and respond to treatment differently, on your first appointment, you will meet with your own team of multi-disciplinary specialists who are expert at treating your particular type of cancer.

The lymphoma multidisciplinary team specializes in treating cancers of the
blood known as either Hodgkin’s or non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. Surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation and, in some cases, stem cell transplantation are used to treat these cancers. Decades of clinical experience show that combinations of these treatments are often most effective. Your team will tailor your cancer treatment for your cancer and for you.

Specialists who will focus on you and your cancer
When you visit Christiana Care’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center you will meet with a team of physicians in one visit. The lymphoma team meets weekly and includes:

* A hematologist/oncologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancers of the blood.
* A radiation oncologist who can pinpoint places where your cancer is growing and use precisely focused X-rays to reduce or destroy it.
* A surgeon who can perform a biopsy to see if your tumor is malignant and/or operate to remove cancer if necessary.
* A pathologist who will be working with your team to examine tumor samples to identify and determine the extent of the cancer.

We’ll take good care of you
When you arrive at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center you will be met by your care coordinator—an oncology-certified or master’s prepared oncology nurse—who will be on hand to answer your questions throughout your entire treatment.

Your care coordinator is part of your own Cancer Care Management team, a group of Christiana Care professionals who will be there when you need them – nurses, physicians, social workers, cancer research nurses, a health psychologist, genetic counselor, registered dietician, pastoral counselor, rehabilitation therapist, complementary medicine providers and community service representatives. Your care coordinator will work closely with the members of your lymphoma team to help you get the care and support services you need, both in and out of the hospital.

On the frontiers of cancer medicine
Christiana Care’s Cancer Program features the most advanced equipment for cancer diagnosis and treatment at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and other locations throughout Christiana Care. Because we are linked to the National Cancer Institute, you may be eligible to participate in clinical trials that test the newest drugs and most promising treatments before they are commercially available. A cancer research nurse will meet with you to discuss the research studies open for your participation.
